Update
The European Union (EU) has suspended the import tariff (duty) on one specific agricultural product – refined microbial oil – to ensure an adequate supply to meet the needs of European manufacturers of food and non-food products.
What is changing?
The EU has suspended Common Customs Tariff (CCT) duties on a range of products that are currently in short supply, to support the needs of European food and non-food industries. These CCT duties are for products that are generally intended for further processing and are not for direct sale on the EU market.
The only agricultural product for which import duties are suspended is refined microbial oil (CN code 1517 90 99) containing (by weight) ≥25% and <70% arachidonic acid, and ≤5% docosahexenoic acid, standardised with vegetable oil.
Why?
For imports of raw materials for intermediate products that are not produced in sufficient quantities within the EU to adequately supply the European food industry, the EU can “autonomously” remove or reduce CCT duties (that is, without negotiating with trading partners). In this way, the EU aims to prevent disturbances to its markets.
Timeline
The Regulation applies from 1 July 2026. The European Commission will review the tariff suspension for microbial oil by 31 December 2026.
