Update
The European Union (EU) has approved polyvinylpolypyrrolidone (E 1202) as a carrier in colour tablets for the decorative colouring of poultry eggshells. This additive will be included in the EU list of permitted food additives.
What is changing?
The EU has approved polyvinylpolypyrrolidone (E 1202) as a carrier in colour tablets for the decorative colouring of poultry eggshells, for use at quantum satis level (a level not higher than necessary to achieve the intended purpose). This additive will be included in the EU list of permitted food additives (Regulation 1333/2008, Annex III).
Why?
The European Commission has determined that additional dietary exposure to polyvinylpolypyrrolidone (E 1202), when used in colour tablets for the decorative colouring of poultry eggshells, is negligible and is not liable to affect human health. No further evaluation in addition to a previous assessment by EFSA (2020) was therefore required.
Timeline
This new use of polyvinylpolypyrrolidone (E 1202) is permitted from 31 July 2025.
Background
Annex III of Regulation 1333/2008 presents a list of food additives approved for use in food additives, food enzymes, food flavourings, and nutrients, and sets out conditions of use for each additive.
Polyvinylpolypyrrolidone (E 1202) is already authorised for use at quantum satis level in tabletop sweeteners and food supplements, and as a carrier in sweeteners.
