What is changing?
The European Union (EU) has raised the import tariff for husked rice (CN code 1006 20) from €30.00 to €42.50 per tonne. This does not apply to husked basmati rice – for specific eligible varieties of basmati – for which the import tariff is always zero.
Why?
The import tariff for husked rice (excluding basmati rice) is set in September based on imports in the previous marketing year (September–August).

The revised import tariff applies from 7 September 2026.
Background
The procedure for establishing import tariffs for husked rice other than basmati rice – the result of negotiations with the USA – is set out in Council Decision 2005/476/EC. Zero duty applies to certain varieties of basmati rice that are listed in Regulation 2023/2835.

What is changing and why?
From 7 September 2026, the European Union (EU) import tariff for husked (brown) rice, excluding husked basmati rice, is €42.50 per tonne. The tariff was previously €30.00 per tonne.
Husked rice import tariffs are set in September based on imports in the previous 12 months. This tariff does not apply to husked basmati rice – for specific eligible varieties of basmati – for which the import tariff is always zero.
Timeline
The revised import tariff applies from 7 September 2026.
