  • Pesticide MRLs

Summary

The EU has raised the maximum residue level (MRL) for mepiquat on oyster mushrooms.

EU raises MRL for mepiquat on oyster mushrooms

Commission Regulation (EU) 2024/1439 of 24 May 2024 amending Annexes II and III to Regulation (EC) No 396/2005 of the European Parliament and of the Council as regards maximum residue levels for fenazaquin, mepiquat and propamocarb in or on certain products

Update

The EU has raised the maximum residue level (MRL) for mepiquat on oyster mushrooms.

Impacted Products

Oyster mushrooms

What is changing?

The EU has raised the MRL for mepiquat on oyster mushrooms from 0.7 to 3 mg/kg.

Why?

In 2019, MRLs for mepiquat on cultivated fungi and oyster mushrooms (Regulations 2019/50 and 2019/1791) were set to address cross-contamination of untreated cultivated fungi with straw lawfully treated with mepiquat. A review was then undertaken of any new information submitted by 31 December 2022 (EFSA 2024).

The EU received an application for the MRLs for mepiquat on cultivated mushrooms and oyster mushrooms to be modified. Based on the monitoring data, for cultivated fungi EFSA (2024) concluded that the current MRL is sufficient and no modification is required. However, for oyster mushrooms EFSA recommended a higher MRL.

Timeline

The new MRL will apply from 16 June 2024.

Recommended Actions

It is important to continue monitoring mepiquat levels in cultivated fungi and oyster mushrooms so that data can be submitted to the Commission before 31 December 2030, after which a new review will be carried out.

Background

MRLs are set in accordance with the rules set out in Regulation 396/2005. For information on current MRLs for other substances, please consult the EU Pesticide Residues database.
