Maximum residue levels for cyflumetofen

  • Food safety
  • Pesticide MRLs

Summary

In January 2024, the EU raised the maximum residue levels (MRLs) for gherkins and courgettes. MRL changes for certain animal products (bovine and equine) were introduced in 2023.

EU raises MRLs for cyflumetofen on gherkins/courgettes but reduces MRLs for certain animal products

Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/173 of 26 January 2023 amending Annexes II and III to Regulation (EC) No 396/2005 of the European Parliament and of the Council as regards maximum residue levels for 1-methyl-3-(trifluoromethyl)-1H-pyrazole-4-carboxamide (PAM), cycloxydim, cyflumetofen, cyfluthrin, metobromuron and penthiopyrad in or on certain products

Commission Regulation (EU) 2024/342 of 22 January 2024 amending Annex II to Regulation (EC) No 396/2005 of the European Parliament and of the Council as regards maximum residue levels for cyflumetofen, oxathiapiprolin and pyraclostrobin in or on certain products

Update

In January 2024, the EU raised the maximum residue levels (MRLs) for gherkins and courgettes. MRL changes for certain animal products (bovine and equine) were introduced in 2023.

Impacted Products

Animal products (bovine and equine), gherkins, courgettes

What is changing?

In January 2024, the EU raised the maximum residue levels (MRLs) for cyflumetofen on gherkins and courgettes from 0.01 to 0.4 mg/kg.

In 2023, the EU reduced the MRLs for cyflumetofen on liver, kidney, and edible offals from 0.02 to 0.01 mg/kg, the limit of determination (LOD, the lowest level that can be detected using the most modern and reliable analytical methods).

Here "cyflumetofen" includes degradation and reaction products which can be determined as 3-(3-thianyl)glutaric acid S-dioxide (BH 517-TGSO2), including other mixtures of constituent isomers including cyflumetofen-M (sum of isomers).

Why?

The MRL changes for gherkins and courgettes followed a request for an MRL change that was reviewed by EFSA (2021). EFSA also supported maintaining the existing MRLs for strawberries, azaroles/ Mediterranean medlars, kaki/ Japanese persimmons, tomato, aubergine/ eggplant, cucumber, and hops, but reduced the LOD for certain bovine and equine products.

Timeline

The new MRLs on gherkins/courgettes apply from 12 February 2024.

Recommended Actions

Exporters of certain bovine and equine animal products (liver, kidney, edible offals) should check for residues of cyflumetofen.

Background

MRLs are set in accordance with the rules set out in Regulation 396/2005. For information on current MRLs for other substances, please consult the EU Pesticide Residues database.
