  • Food safety
  • Pesticide MRLs

Summary

The European Union (EU) has increased the maximum residue levels (MRLs) for oxathiapiprolin on avocados to 0.07 mg/kg; and on currants, gooseberries, and rosehips to 0.5 mg/kg, in line with Codex Alimentarius MRLs (CXLs) adopted in 2024.

EU sets MRLs for oxathiapiprolin on avocados and certain berries in line with Codex standards

Commission Regulation (EU) 2025/1164 of 13 June 2025 amending Annexes II and III to Regulation (EC) No 396/2005 of the European Parliament and of the Council as regards maximum residue levels for cyantraniliprole, cyflumetofen, deltamethrin, mefentrifluconazole, mepiquat and oxathiapiprolin in or on certain products

Update

The European Union (EU) has increased the maximum residue levels (MRLs) for oxathiapiprolin on avocados to 0.07 mg/kg; and on currants, gooseberries, and rosehips to 0.5 mg/kg, in line with Codex Alimentarius MRLs (CXLs) adopted in 2024.

Impacted Products

Avocados, currants, gooseberries, rosehips, blueberries, radish leaves

What is changing?

The EU has increased the MRLs for oxathiapiprolin to 0.07 mg/kg on avocados, and to 0.5 mg/kg on currants, gooseberries, and rosehips.

These MRLs were previously set at 0.01 mg/kg, the limit of determination (LOD, the lowest level that can be detected using the most modern and reliable analytical methods).

Why?

The new MRLs are in alignment with the new CXLs adopted in November 2024 (CAC 2024). The EU aligns MRLs with CXLs where they are not considered to be a concern for consumer safety.

Timeline

The new MRLs on avocados, currants, gooseberries, and rosehips apply from 6 July 2025.

Background

In 2024 the EU adopted an MRL of 1.5 mg/kg for oxathiapiprolin on radish leaves. In 2023, an import tolerance MRL of 0.5 mg/kg was set for blueberries. The European Food Safety Authority determined these higher MRLs to be safe for consumers (EFSA 2022a, 2022b).

The new MRL for radish leaves has applied since 12 February 2024, and the new MRL for blueberries has applied since 14 February 2023.

MRLs are set in accordance with the rules set out in Regulation 396/2005. For information on current MRLs for other substances, please consult the EU Pesticide Residues database.
