What is changing?
The EU has authorised that Acheta domesticus (house cricket) partially defatted powder may be placed on the EU market as a novel food. The food can be used in multigrain bread and rolls, crackers and breadsticks, cereal bars, pre-mixes for baked products, biscuits, pasta-based products, stuffed pasta-based products, sauces, processed potato products, legume- and vegetable-based dishes, pizza, pasta-based dishes, whey powder, meat analogues, soups and soup concentrates or powders, maize flour based snacks, beer-like beverages, chocolate confectionary, nuts and oilseeds, snacks other than chips, meat preparations. Details on the permitted use are set out in the Annex to the Regulation.
Any food containing this powder must carry an allergen warning, such as "this ingredient may cause allergic reactions to consumers with known allergies to crustaceans, molluscs and products thereof, and to dust mites".
Only the company that applied for the authorisation, Cricket One Co. Ltd, is authorised to place the novel food on the EU market for a period of 5 years, unless another company obtains a novel food authorisation for Acheta domesticus (house cricket) partially defatted powder (without reference to scientific data protected by Cricket One Co.) or with the agreement of Cricket One Co.
Timeline
The 5-year period of exclusive rights of Cricket One Co. to put this novel food on the market begins on 24 January 2023.
