The European Commission has authorised cellobiose as a novel food that may be placed on the EU market in a number of foods, including food supplements.

What is changing?
The EU has authorised cellobiose as a novel food that may be placed on the EU market in a number of foods. These include food supplements as defined in Directive 2002/46/EC, but not those permitted for use by infants and young children. Details on the permitted use are set out in the Annex to the Regulation.
Only the company that applied for the authorisation, SAVANNA Ingredients GmbH, is authorised to place this novel food on the EU market for a period of 5 years, unless another company obtains a novel food authorisation for cellobiose (without reference to scientific data protected by SAVANNA Ingredients GmbH) or with the agreement of SAVANNA Ingredients GmbH.
Timeline
The 5-year period of exclusive rights of SAVANNA Ingredients GmbH to put this novel food on the market ends 1 June 2028.
