European Commission updates the specifications of the novel food trans-resveratrol (from microbial source) for use in food supplements
Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2022/672 of 22 April 2022 amending Implementing Regulation (EU) 2017/2470 as regards the specifications of the novel food trans-resveratrol (from microbial source)
Update
The European Commission has updated the specifications of the novel food trans-resveratrol (from microbial source) in Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2022/672.
What is changing?
The Commission has accepted a proposed amendment to remove the requirement that 100% of the particles of trans-resveratrol should be <62.23 μm.
Why?
The original novel food authorisation – Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2016/1190 – included the requirement that 100% of the particles of this novel food produced by the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae should be of a size less than 62.23 micrometres (<62.23 μm). However, a change in the specification was requested to take account of variation in the particle sizes of trans-resveratrol from a microbial source in the course of its production and processing for use in food supplements. EFSA evaluated the request and found that the particle size of trans-resveratrol from a microbial source is comparable to the particle size profile of the chemically synthesised trans-resveratrol already evaluated by EFSA.
Timeline
This amendment entered into force on 15 May 2022.
