European Commission replaces Regulation that sets maximum levels for contaminants in food
Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/915 of 25 April 2023 on maximum levels for certain contaminants in food and repealing Regulation (EC) No 1881/2006
Update
This Regulation replaces Regulation (EC) No 1881/2006, but does not change the current maximum levels of contaminants or other rules and principles already set out by that Regulation.
What is changing?
This new Regulation tidies up (formally "recasts") and replaces previous rules on contaminants (Regulation 1881/2006) by updating references to other EU legislation and clarifying the language used. It does not change the content of the rules, or the maximum levels for contaminants already established.
Why?
Regulation 1881/2006 and related legislation have been amended multiple times since 2006. There was a need to consolidate and clarify the legislation in light of these changes.
Timeline
The new Regulation applies from 25 May 2023.
