EU lowers import tariffs for husked rice

Update
The EU has lowered the import tariffs/duties for husked (brown) rice from €42.5 to €30 per tonne. The import tariff for rice is set according to the quantity of imports over the previous 6 months.

What is changing?
The EU has lowered the import tariff for husked (brown) rice (other than Basmati rice) from €42.5 to €30 per tonne. No import duty is applied to imports of husked Basmati rice.
Why?
The EU sets import tariffs for husked rice according to the quantity of imports over the previous 6 months. Between 1 September 2023 and 29 February 2024, 105,172 tonnes of husked rice was imported into the EU.
Timeline
The new import tariff applies from 7 March 2024.
Background
The procedure for establishing import tariffs for husked rice other than Basmati rice resulted from negotiations with the USA (Council Decision 2005/476/EC).
Based on the level of husked rice imports for the first 6 months of the marketing year (September to February):
- below 191,113 tonnes, duty is fixed at €30/tonne
- above 191,113 tonnes but not higher than 258,565 tonnes, duty is €42.50/tonne
- higher than 258,565 tonnes, duty is €65/tonne.
