What is changing?
The EU has authorised that pea and rice protein fermented by Lentinula edodes may be placed on the EU market as a novel food. The food can be used in bakery wares, breads, rolls, croutons, pizza, breakfast cereals and cereal bars, fruit- and vegetable-based drinks, ready-to-mix beverage powders, cocoa and chocolate confectionary, dairy analogues and non-dairy meal replacements for weight control, fermented milk-based products, pasta-based products, meat preparations and meat products, soups (ready-to-eat) and soup concentrates or powders, salads and meat analogues. Details on the permitted use are set out in the Annex to the Regulation.
Only the company that applied for the authorisation, MycoTechnology, Inc., is authorised to place the novel food on the EU market for a period of 5 years, unless another company obtains a novel food authorisation for pea and rice protein fermented by Lentinula edodes (without reference to scientific data protected by MycoTechnology) or with the agreement of MycoTechnology.
Timeline
The 5-year period of exclusive rights of MycoTechnology to put this novel food on the market begins on 24 January 2023.
