What is changing?
Non-EU countries are now allowed to export to the EU food, food ingredients, feed, and products containing, consisting of, or produced from GM soyabeans GMB151 × DAS-44406-6 and MON 94313-8. The authorisation to export to the EU products containing, consisting of, or produced from GM maize MON 87460-4 has been renewed.
These GM soyabeans and maize can not be grown in the EU. When exported to the EU, any products obtained from them must be clearly labelled as “not for cultivation”. No additional specific labelling requirements are necessary.
The authorisation holders are:
- BASF Agricultural Solutions US LLC for soyabean GMB151 × DAS-44406-6
- Bayer CropScience LLC for soyabean MON 94313-8 and maize MON 87460-4.
Why?
The approvals are based on favourable opinions by the European Food Safety Authority that GM soyabeans GMB151 × DAS-44406-6 and MON 94313-8, and maize MON 87460-4, are safe for human and animal health, and for the environment (EFSA 2025, 2026a, 2026b). There are no nutritional concerns associated with consuming these soyabeans and maize.
Timeline
These authorisations and reauthorisations apply from 23 September 2026 and will remain valid for 10 years (until September 2036).
What are the major implications for exporting countries?
Suppliers of food containing or consisting of GM soyabeans GMB151 × DAS-44406-6 and MON 94313-8, and maize MON 87460-4, have long-term legal security for the export of these products to the EU market.
Background
A list of all authorised GM products can be found on the EU’s GMO Register.
The authorisation of GM crops remains an extremely sensitive political issue in the EU. The authorisation process normally requires EU Member States to authorise or reject applications. In recent years, there has generally not been enough political support (a “qualified majority” of Member States) to reach a decision to either authorise or reject applications. In such cases, as here for GM soyabean GMB151 × DAS-44406-6, the European Commission is permitted to authorise the product in the light of a positive EFSA risk assessment.
